THE HORIZONS SCHOOL Mission Statement
THE HORIZONS SCHOOL offers a non-degree transition program specifically
designed to facilitate personal, social and career independence for students
with specific learning disabilities and other handicapping conditions.
THE
HORIZONS SCHOOL curriculum is designed to prepare young adults with learning
disabilities and mild learning problems to live self-sufficient, fulfilling
lives by offering practical lessons in life, career development, and friendships.
This nondegree program offers students a peer experience and helps equip
them to face the challenges of living on their own. To become a valuable
and contributing member of the community, young people should be given
the necessary tools to successfully set and achieve their goals. THE HORIZONS
SCHOOL gives students these tools by focusing on three vital areas: life
skills, social skills and career development. Nurtured by trained professionals,
students enjoy learning experiences in a supported environment while receiving
supervised on-the-job training.
With a four-to-one student-staff ratio, the program helps students develop
the competencies necessary to function in the real world. Decision-making,
communicating, and self-managing skills provide the foundation for valuable
learning activities. Each student has an academic advisor to monitor progress,
and families receive a progress report each term.
